Message I was doing the first oil change on one of my wife's prior cars; it was a 99 Eclipse Spyder automatic. Threw the car up on ramps, climbed under, saw the oil drain bolt, took it out, oil drained out. Replaced it and the filter, filled the car with the manual's given amount of oil, and proceeded to take the car for a spin around the block.

Well, the car shifted into reverse pretty hard pulling out of the driveway, and driving around the block it seemed very unhappy when shifting gears. It would shift hard, and the car jerked every time it shifted.

Got back home a few minutes later, checked the oil level, and it was way, way higher on the dipstick than it should have been. Looked under the car again, realized what I did, and checked the ATF fluid level; it was empty. It was the first FWD car I had done an oil change in, so I didn't even think about the tranny being right there...

So I had drained the tranny completely, and put 8 quarts of oil in the engine =) Had to re-drain the oil (and waste 4 brand new quarts of Mobil 1,) and had to go buy more oil and ATF.

The insult to injury was that the Mitubishi auto tranny required some special ATF that is only sold at Mitsubishi dealers. It was Sunday, so all dealers' parts departments were closed, and Pep Boys, Checker, Autozone, etc. didn't have comparable fluid. She didn't have another car to drive to work the next day, so we both had to take the morning off work to go to the dealer to buy the fluid, and go home and fill it up.

Stupid FWD cars... =)
